PARNAIBA – MAIN ACCESS TO RIVER PARNAIBA DELTA
Parnaiba is a calm and welcoming city, considered as the main city of northern Piaui. The main part of its municipality is occupied by a floodplain formed by Parnaiba river delta, caracterized by many lagoons, dunes and about 70 islands. A real wonder. The biggest island is Ilha Grande de Santa Isabel (Saint Isabel’s Big Island), close to the city centre, where the Praia da Pedra do Sal (Grain of Salt beach) is set.
Praia da Pedra do Sal is famous because of its big rocks, which divide it into two parts, the quitest one, used by fishermen, and the rough one with big waves, used by aquatic sports lovers.
The hot weather is softened by big woody streets and a constant breeze blowing all year long.
XVII century colonial mansions are some of the finest monuments of the city, still well preserved since the age of the Vila de São Joao da Parnaiba. The most important mansion is Casa Grande de Parnaiba, owned by the founder of the city, Simplicio Dias, set in Avenue Presidente Vargas. According to the ancient inhabitants, it has a subterranean connection to the church Nossa Senhora das Gracas.
The baroque Cathedral Nossa Senhora das Gracas was built in 1770 by Simplicio Dias. After renovation in 1936 it lost part of its style. In Praca das graças is still possible to visit the Igreja do Rosario, built in the XVIII century for the slavers, so that they could pray without entering the cathedral.
Close to Street São Pedro there is a cashew tree planted around XVIII century by famous poet Humberto de Campos in the garden that used to be part of his house. On the tree are hung metal signs with his main poems.
Another important monument is the Obelisk, built in Santo Antonio Square in 1844 to celebrate the first century of the city.
